Why so many people give up on building their own website

Website builders make starting look easy. Finishing is another matter. In a 2025 survey of 1,000 US adults by All About Cookies, more than half of the people who had started a website project gave up before finishing it.

  • 51%Gave up before finishing

Just over half abandoned their website project at least for a time.

  • 22%Never went back

They abandoned the website altogether. Another 29% finished later, with outside help.

  • 25%Had no significant issues

Only one in four built a website without running into a significant problem.

What about Wix? Wix doesn’t publish how many people give up, and we haven’t found a reliable study that measures it, so we won’t quote a number. Its 2025 annual report does say that “many registered users never publish a website”. It counts about 304.2 million registered users and about 6.1 million premium subscriptions. That isn’t a drop-out rate, because some people run free websites and one person can hold several subscriptions, but it does show how far the journey is from signing up to having a paid website.

We look at this in more depth in our article on why half of DIY websites get abandoned.

Wix itself is a very good platform, which is why we’re a partner. The hard part is everything a template can’t do for you: planning the pages, writing the words, designing the layout, and setting up search and security.

the real cost/

Learning to build a website does your business an injustice

If you run a business, your time is its most valuable resource. Every evening spent learning a website builder is time not spent with customers, on your own trade or with your family. You’re doing yourself and your business an injustice, and the website you end up with may still perform poorly.

It may not be found

Page titles, descriptions, headings and structured data all help search engines and AI tools understand a website. They’re easy to miss when you’re learning as you go.

It may be slow or awkward on phones

Oversized pictures and heavy add-ons slow pages down, and a layout that looks fine on a laptop can be hard to use on a phone, where many people will first find you.

It may not win trust

A website is often the first impression of your business. Unfinished pages or a generic template can send visitors to a competitor before they’ve read a word.

It may not bring enquiries

A website has to lead people towards calling or getting in touch. Without clear wording and a clear next step, it can look finished and still bring you very little work.

wordpress security/

Is WordPress safe if you set it up yourself?

WordPress core is well maintained: security specialists Patchstack recorded only six vulnerabilities in it during 2025, all low priority. The danger for a do-it-yourself website lies in the plugins and themes added to it, and in who keeps them up to date.

  • 11,334New vulnerabilities in 2025

Found across the WordPress ecosystem, 42% more than in 2024.

  • 91%Were in plugins

The remaining 9% were in themes, so every add-on you install matters.

  • 46%Had no fix in time

The developer hadn’t released a fix when the flaw was made public, so updating alone may not protect you.

  • 5 hoursTo the first attack

The weighted median time to first exploit for heavily exploited flaws. That’s often faster than anyone would notice.

Most website owners don’t have the time to watch for any of that. Common mistakes include:

  • Leaving plugins, themes or WordPress itself out of date
  • Installing plugins that are no longer maintained
  • Using weak passwords or sharing one admin login
  • Having no tested backup to restore from
  • Relying on the hosting company’s defences alone
  • Ignoring plugins that are switched off but still installed

Getting it wrong can mean a defaced website, visitors sent to scam pages, stolen enquiries and a website that has to be taken offline. If personal data is exposed, you may also have to report it to the Information Commissioner’s Office within 72 hours. Cyber attacks are not just a big-company problem: in the UK Government’s latest survey, 43% of businesses had identified a breach or attack in the past year, including 42% of micro and 46% of small businesses. That figure covers all kinds of attack, not just websites.

common questions/

Website rescue questions

Can someone finish my Wix website for me?

Yes. Cirrus Design Studio is a WIX Legend Partner with certified Wix Studio developers, and we can pick up a part-built Wix website and finish it. Tell us how far you’ve got on our contact page.

Why is building my own website so hard?

Because a website builder gives you the tools, not the skills. You still need to plan pages, write clearly and design layouts, then handle search and security. In one 2025 survey, 37% named design and layout as their top frustration.

Is WordPress too complicated for a small business?

It can be if nobody is looking after it. WordPress is capable, but a typical website relies on plugins and themes that need ongoing attention. If you’d rather not manage that, Hydra has no third-party plugins and updates itself.

Is Hydra easier than WordPress?

Yes, for the job of keeping a website up to date. We build the website, so you only edit pages, pictures and news in one simple system, with no plugins or updates to manage.

Can you help if my WordPress site has been hacked?

Yes, talk to us. We’ll give you honest advice on what to do next, and we can rebuild your website on Hydra. Call 01202 028 608 and we’ll talk it through.

Do I have to start again from nothing?

Usually not. Your words, pictures and the thinking you’ve already done all help, and we’ll reuse whatever is worth keeping. We’ll also set up redirects from your old addresses when a website moves.

How much does website rescue cost?

It depends on how much needs doing, so you’ll get a written fixed-price quote before any work starts. Our guide to how much a website costs explains what affects the price.

Will I still be able to edit the website myself?

Yes. Whether your website is on Wix or Hydra, we’ll show you how to make everyday changes, and we’re here if you’d rather leave something to us.
